Face & Neck: Frequently Asked Questions

What will a Facelift Do?

A facelift is an “antigravitational” procedure.  It deals with the sagging and skin excess which develops during aging.  Primarily, the improvement is noted in the neckline, jowls, submental region (double chin), nasolabial fold (the crease that forms from the nose to the corner of the mouth), and lower face (from cheekbones to “Adams Apple”).  A facelift generally increases definition of there neckline and reduces the sagged look of the lower face.  In some cases there may be an improvement in the “crow’s feet” area.

What is a Mini-Facelift?

The term “mini-facelift” does not have a standard definition.  Usually it refers to an operation where the surgery takes place in an area from in front of hte ear to a line drawn from the edge of the eye to the jaw.

I personally thin the results from this type of procedure do not “stand the test of time”; neither does it allow adequate treatment of the neckline, nasolabial fold, nor submental region.

How long does it take to recover?

Recovery time varies greatly from person to person.  There are generally three phases to recovery: early, intermediate, and long term recovery.  Early recovery is what most patients are concerned about and usually lasts about two weeks.  During this time you are bruised and swollen to some extent.  During the first week your activities should be limited, and you will need to come into the office to get stitches removed.  By the end of this early period, most people feel comfortable being seen in public (although some covering makeup may be needed).

Intermediate and long term recovery extend for several more weeks to a few months.  During this time more and more refinements of your procedure will become evident, and your face will “become your own again.”
